Beekers Berries redcurrants

Characteristics

Redcurrants are small, round fruits with a bright red colour. They have a thin skin with a shiny appearance. Redcurrants grow in clusters and are placed in the punnets with the clusters intact.

The flavour of redcurrants is primarily fresh with a slightly tart note. Thanks to their skin, the berries have a pleasantly crisp bite.

Season

The redcurrant season for Beekers Berries in the Netherlands runs from June to August.

Growing locations

The ideal climate for growing redcurrants is a mild maritime climate. The bushes are hardy in winter, so frost is not an issue. Summers that are not too hot are most suitable, with average temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. The Netherlands is very well suited for redcurrant cultivation, which is why we primarily grow our redcurrants here.

Storing redcurrants

Storing redcurrants: how to keep them fresh

  1. Place a sheet of kitchen paper in the bottom of a container and arrange the redcurrants in their clusters on top. The paper will absorb any excess moisture.
  2. Store the redcurrants uncovered in the fridge, preferably in the vegetable drawer.
  3. Want to wash the redcurrants? Do so only just before eating and allow them to drain thoroughly on kitchen paper.

Behind the Berries

How we grow our redcurrants

At Beekers Berries, we have been growing the finest redcurrants for many years – always with care and expertise. On our fields, the bushes are given space to grow calmly, with great attention to biodiversity and soil health.

We also pick and process the redcurrants carefully. Some are delivered directly to consumers, while others are stored in cold storage to make redcurrants available outside the growing season – all without compromising on quality or flavour.

Working with nature

We work closely with nature. In our greenhouses, bees, bumblebees, and other beneficial insects play an important role. Our bees come from a local beekeeper and, together with the bumblebees, ensure cross-pollination. Other insects act as natural predators to control harmful pests, helping us maintain a healthy environment for our berries.

Frequently asked questions

Redcurrants are naturally high in fibre and low in calories, making them an ideal choice for a healthy lifestyle.

Redcurrants are perfect for enjoying on their own as a snack. We especially love adding them to dishes for a fresh, tangy contrast. For example, top your salad with fresh redcurrants or use them to decorate cakes and pastries.

At Beekers Berries, we grow several redcurrant varieties. However, there are very few differences between them. Some varieties have larger clusters than others, but otherwise, the redcurrants are very similar.

Beekers Berries redcurrants are available all year round. By storing some of our redcurrants in cold storage, we can offer them throughout the year while maintaining quality and flavour.

Fresh redcurrants can easily be frozen. Spread them over a tray so the berries touch each other as little as possible. Place the tray in the freezer for 2–3 hours. Once the berries are firm, transfer them to a freezer bag or airtight container. Redcurrants can be stored in the freezer for 8–12 months.
