Characteristics

A blackberry is made up of many small cells. This rounded fruit turns a deep purple, almost black, when fully ripe. Beekers Berries blackberries are sweet with a hint of tartness. Blackberries only develop their sweet flavour once fully ripe – until then, the tartness dominates. Our blackberries are known for their rich, full flavour with an earthy undertone.

Season

Just like our strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, blackberries are available throughout the year. In the Netherlands, the first blackberries are picked from late April/early May, and the season runs until November. Outside the Dutch season, we work with long-term growers in other countries so we can provide the finest blackberries all year round.

Growing locations

Blackberries require a climate that is not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter. They tolerate light frost and need adequate rainfall, making the Netherlands an excellent location for growing blackberries. In addition to the Dutch harvest, Beekers Berries blackberries are primarily grown in Spain and Portugal.

Storing blackberries

Storing blackberries: how to keep them fresh

  1. Place a sheet of kitchen paper in a plastic container and spread the blackberries over it. The paper will absorb any excess moisture.
  2. Store the blackberries uncovered in the fridge, preferably in the vegetable drawer.
  3. Want to wash the blackberries? Do so only just before eating – blackberries are sensitive to moisture and bruising.

Behind the Berries

How we grow our blackberries

At Beekers Berries, blackberry production begins with the varieties. Our blackberry varieties are carefully chosen for their strength and resilience. This helps minimise the use of crop protection and ensures the best quality.

Our blackberry plants grow in pots and are given plenty of space to develop into fully grown bushes. The fruit is picked by hand by our team. For the higher-hanging blackberries, they use a convenient trolley, allowing them to stand safely and comfortably. This way, our team can carry out their work with ease.

Working with nature

We work closely with nature. In our greenhouses, bees, bumblebees, and other beneficial insects play an important role. Our bees come from a local beekeeper and, together with the bumblebees, ensure cross-pollination. Other insects act as natural predators to control harmful pests, helping us maintain a healthy environment for our berries.

Fresh blackberries can be frozen. Spread them over a tray so that the berries touch each other as little as possible. Place the tray in the freezer for 2-3 hours. Once the berries are fully frozen, transfer them to a freezer bag or airtight container. Frozen blackberries can be kept for 8-12 months.
